Grok Imagine Image is xAI's cost-efficient image generation model. It produces good quality images at a fraction of the cost of the Pro variant. Supports aspect ratio control and optional 2K resolution output. Image editing is prompt-driven (no mask support).

This is the first-generation Imagine image model, and it arrived as part of a bundle rather than on its own: xAI launched image generation together with video generation and video editing behind a single API meant for end-to-end creative workflows. The lab was explicit about why that release was engineered and priced the way it was. Partners had told it that quality alone is not enough when latency and cost make iteration painful, so xAI optimised speed and economics alongside quality, with the stated aim of letting teams explore several directions in parallel and converge through cheap, rapid experimentation.

That is still exactly the job this tier does. It costs half of what the second-generation model costs per image, and xAI kept it in service when it retired its separate quality-mode image model, so it remains the deliberate low-cost option rather than a leftover on the way out. Generating a wide spread of candidates and discarding most of them is a reasonable thing to do at this rate in a way it is not at the higher one.

The controls are the same ones the newer model exposes. The full aspect-ratio range is available, from tall portrait through square to wide cinematic formats, with an automatic setting that follows your first reference image; output comes back at 1K or 2K as PNG or JPEG. It edits as well as generates: supply a source image and describe the change, or supply up to five reference images at once and describe the composite. Editing is prompt-driven throughout, so there is no mask, and there is no seed to make a result reproducible.

Where it gives ground is precision. xAI's own recommendation for images now points at Imagine Image 2.0, which is the model the lab rebuilt around typography, dense layout and small text staying legible. If the picture has words in it - a poster, a slide, a product label, an infographic - that is the one to use. If it does not, or if you are still working out what the picture should be at all, this model does the same job for half the money.
